Storm Sewer Install — Start to Finish

Storm sewer is the part of a site nobody sees once the lot is paved, which is exactly why it has to be right. These photos are from our storm jobs around the metro, in the order the work goes in.

Scope of Work

  • Precast inlets and junction boxes received and set
  • Trench cut to depth and line
  • Rock bedding under every run
  • Pipe laid to plan grade, joints wrapped
  • Connections grouted inside the structures
  • Backfill compacted in lifts

How to Read It

The 11 photos below come from our jobs around the metro and are put in the order the work happens, so you can follow the job from the first step to the last.

Use the arrows or the thumbnail strip to move through the stages. Each caption says what that frame is showing and why it mattered to the ones that came after it.

The Work, Stage by Stage

Every stage in order, with what it shows and why it mattered.

Precast boxes arrive on the trailer. Each one is checked against the plan before it comes off the truck.

What Matters on Jobs Like This

Compaction you can count on

Backfill goes back in lifts over the pipe, and we use soil engineering to guarantee compaction. That is what keeps the lot over a storm trench from settling after it is paved.

Grade checked before it is covered

Pipe set off grade holds water and silt, and you only find out after the lot is paved. Every run is checked against the plan before backfill.

Joints wrapped, connections grouted

Unsealed joints let fines wash into the pipe and leave voids that turn into sinkholes. Joints are wrapped and every connection inside the boxes is grouted.

Tight sites next to live traffic

A lot of metro storm work happens beside open streets and businesses. Junction boxes and tie-ins get set with the staging and traffic control the site needs.
